As part of exercising its oversight responsibility on the Executive, the Judicial Committee of Parliament has held a stakeholder meeting with various institutions responsible for Justice delivery in the country to help address their concerns.
In his opening remarks the Chairman of the Committee and the Member of Parliament for Salaga North, Hon. Alhassan Abdallah Iddi noted that the engagement will allow the Committee to know the successes of these institutions as well as the challenges being faced by them in their line of duty.
According to the Chairman of the Committee after their interactions, the Committee will ascertain how best it can assist these state institutions to discharge their mandate efficiently and effectively.
He pointed out that Parliament is an arm of Government and it is better placed with the power of oversight responsibility to advocate the independence of the justice delivery system in Ghana, assess their priority areas and ensure the independence of the rule of law in the country.
The legal reform institutions were, Ghana Law Reform Commission, Ghana Legal Aid Commission, Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Amnesty International, Child Rights International and Law and Development Associates.
Discussions and presentations at the meeting were centred on the fundamental human rights and freedoms of the citizens, the right to free speech, protection of the vulnerable in society, protection and providing for the children, the right to free legal defence in the courts, economic growth and eradication of poverty, public awareness and education among others.
The institutions responsible for justice delivery in the Country also seek to amend some existing laws that have outlived their usefulness to make it more relevant.
The Chairman used the opportunity to thank the institutions for their pivotal roles in helping to deliver and maintain justice in the country.
