A fire outbreak swept through the children’s ward of Saboba Hospital, destroying hospital beds and other essential items.
The blaze, which broke out around 5:00 pm, also affected the NECO ward, a 12-bed facility within the hospital.
Nurse Manager George Olamba confirmed that all patients on admission at the time were safely evacuated.
“We were able to evacuate all seven patients who were on admission at the time of the fire,” he said.
Mr. Olamba, however, raised concerns about the Ghana National Fire Service’s response, noting that delays in deploying equipment effectively slowed efforts to contain the flames.
According to him, community members had to intervene to prevent the situation from worsening.
“When the fire service arrived, their pump could not respond, so the community members had to come in with buckets of water, and other containers to be able to put it out,” Mr. Olamba explained.
He disclosed that the Ghana National Fire Service has since launched investigations into the cause of the fire.
The incident has revived memories of a similar fire outbreak at Saboba Senior High School’s girls’ dormitory last year. In that case, a reported failure of the fire tender led to the destruction of the dormitory and the tragic death of a student.
