The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has cautioned individuals to be wary of the kind of food items they buy from the market during the festive season.
According to NADMO, some retailers and importers sell unwholesome products to unsuspecting consumers during such festive seasons which can be harmful to them.
The Ga East Municipal NADMO directorates said this when they seized some expired products from the open market, supermarkets, marts and shops at Taifa in the Dome Kwabenya constituency.
Speaking during the exercise, the Ga East Municipal NADMO Director, Seth Kofi Osei Kissi stated that there were expired food products on the shelves of some shops, restaurants and hotels among others that needed urgent attention.
The operation which was led by NADMO was carried out in some hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, markets places and warehouses.
Some seized products included body creams, soft and hard drinks, and food products such as corned beef, tin tomatoes, mayonnaise and salad creams.
According to the Ga East Municipal NADMO Director, Seth Kofi Osei Kissi, this is to ensure the safety of the public during the Christmas festivities.
He added that the exercise is not only about checking expired foods in various shops but also checking the state of fire extinguishers and other safety protocols needed in these shops and institutions across the country.
Mr. Osei Kissi further added that the exercise is not to close down affected shops but rather to educate shop owners, and managers of various institutions on the need to do the right things.
He also advised individuals to check expiry dates on food items they buy from supermarkets, especially canned foods and also urged individuals to report to various health directorates and the Food and Drugs Authority for the needed actions to be taken.
