The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) increased pension benefits in 2025, raising the minimum monthly pension by more than 32 percent while paying out GH¢7.6 billion in benefits to retirees, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has disclosed in its 2025 Annual Report.
According to the report, the minimum monthly pension increased from GH¢300 to GH¢396.58 following an average pension increment of 12 percent effective January 2025. The average monthly pension also rose from GH¢1,776.81 to GH¢1,990.03.
The NPRA said SSNIT paid GH¢7.6 billion in pension benefits during the year, while contributions received rose to GH¢9.7 billion. The scheme ended the year with 2.14 million active contributors, 261,928 pensioners, total assets of GH¢30.6 billion, and a nominal investment return of 23.8 percent.
Highlighting the overall performance of the pensions industry, the Authority said total pension assets under management increased by 28.9 percent to GH¢111.1 billion in 2025, underpinned by sustained contributions and healthy investment returns.
“The pensions industry continued its strong growth trajectory, with a notable rise in Assets Under Management (AUM). Total pension fund assets increased by 28.9% from GHS 86.09 billion in 2024 to GHS 111.1 billion in 2025,” the report stated.
The report said the industry’s expansion came despite a moderation in growth compared with the previous year, noting that lower inflation and interest rates resulted in positive real returns while moderating investment income from fixed-income portfolios.
The NPRA further expressed confidence in the sector’s resilience, saying it remains well-positioned to safeguard contributors’ retirement savings.
“Overall, the pensions industry remained financially stable, liquid, and resilient in 2025. Growth in AUM, positive investment performance, improved diversification, and sound liquidity indicators supported the industry’s performance during the year,” the Authority said.
It added that while the sector performed strongly, it would continue strengthening supervision and risk management to protect pension assets and sustain public confidence.
“The Authority will therefore continue to strengthen data-quality controls, promote prudent diversification, monitor emerging risks, and use the implemented RBSS to support proactive and evidence-based supervision,” the report said.
