The Minister of Food and Agriculture who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Abetifi Constituency, Bryan Acheampong, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to consider permitting members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) to join special voters.
According to the Abetifi legislator in a post on X on Friday, July 19, the SDA have huge members and the EC, cannot deprive them of voting due to their religious beliefs.
Leadership of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church petitioned the Attorney General’s office to sponsor a bill to amend the Saturday, December 7, 2024, election day, indicating that it is the Sabbath Day to worship God.
The Church, however, proposed the 1st or 2nd Tuesday of November to ensure an all-inclusive democratic exercise that would not deliberately deny others from exercising their voting rights.
“It is the considered view of the Church that this bill should be sponsored by the Office of the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General (Executive) because of its nature. Hence, the request for this meeting with the Honourable Minister in that regard.”
Kindly join me in calling on the EC to allow the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) to vote with the security agencies. The SDA has an 800,000+ strong Ghanaian membership that is disenfranchised because, by their faith, they do not work on Saturdays and, therefore, do not vote.
