The Ghana Plastics Manufacturers Association has called off their planned protest aimed at signalling government to suspend the implementation of the 5% excise tax.
On Tuesday July, 2, president of the association, Ebbo Botwe, at a press conference in Accra announced that the association planned to demonstrate on July 10 after several calls on government to suspend the tax proved futile.
However, with just two days to go, the association in a press statement released on Monday July 8, has called off the protest and intended shutdown of production.
They explained that, after a meeting with the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, he has assured them of further engagements with government to stop the implementation of the 5% excise tax.
“We have held a fruitful discussion with government that is ministry of trade and industry on Friday July 5 on the issue of the implementation of 5% excise tax on all locally manufactured plastic products. The Hon. Michael Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry Okyere Baafi, has shown good faith and has assured that he will facilitate further engagement”, the statement said.
