Personnel of the Ghana police have allegedly fired tear gas at protestors of Arise Ghana at Circle Obra Spot who are yet to begin their demonstration against what the group says is the “persistent and astronomical hikes in fuel prices.”
According to the group, this has “imposed excruciating economic hardships on Ghanaians”.
The demonstration dubbed #KromAyeShe, inspired by the pressure group, Arise Ghana has so far attracted hundreds of demonstrators from across the country who had made their way to the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
Myrepubliconline’s reporter at the scene, Philip Anto reports that the police, who had already engaged organisers of the march to discuss issues, regarding routes and duration had to move swiftly to try to clear demonstrators who attempted to block entry points to the city. Angered by marching orders from the police, the demonstrators defied the orders and in response pelted stones at security personnel.
According to him, when the leaders of Arise Ghana started engaging the heads of the security, the demonstrators started throwing stones at the security personnel and this is making difficult to resolve the issue amicably for the protest to begin.
Reports indicate that no protester is hurt as a result of the tear gas fired by the Police.
The protest comes after an Accra High Court ruled that the demonstration should take place between 8am and 4pm on the route proposed by the Ghana Police, instead of running the demonstration into nightfall.
The ruling by the Court followed an application by the Police which said the initial plan by organisers of the demonstration to picket the seat of government till about 10pm on Tuesday, did not augur well for the safety of the demonstrators and the rest of the public.
