The Ghana Police Service has arrested 26 individuals for indiscriminately brandishing and firing toy guns in a public space, a practice that has sparked public concern in recent months.
In a statement, the police confirmed that the suspects are in custody and assisting with investigations.
A significant number of toy guns have been confiscated as evidence, and the individuals involved will be arraigned in court to face justice.
The police described the act as offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace, contrary to Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), among other potential charges.
As part of efforts to tackle the growing trend of toy gun misuse in various parts of the country, the police have launched special operations to apprehend others engaging in similar activities.
The statement urged the public, particularly the youth, to refrain from such actions, emphasizing the potential threat they pose to public safety and order.
“We caution the public to desist from this act as it constitutes an offense under the law.
The Ghana Police Service remains committed to maintaining law and order and will do all that it takes for our beloved country to continue to be at peace with herself,” the statement read.
The arrests and ongoing operations reflect the police’s proactive stance in addressing concerns over the misuse of toy guns and its implications for public safety.
