Three suspects have been arrested in the Eastern Region following an intelligence-led police operation that uncovered a large drug trafficking network and an attempted GH₵100,000 bribe to compromise officers.

According to a statement from the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service (Ghana Police Service) issued on Monday, May 11, 2026, the operation was triggered by a tip-off on May 10 about suspected narcotics stored at Akosombo-Bonya.

Acting on intelligence, officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department placed the area under surveillance. The operation led them to intercept a Hyundai Rhino truck (GR 5724-15) near Krobo Girls Senior High School, which was later tracked to a secluded location near Atua Government Hospital.

Police say suspects were caught transferring sacks of suspected substances from the truck into a Howo Zonda tipper truck when officers moved in. Several individuals fled the scene, but the two vehicles and the suspected narcotics were seized.

During the operation, about 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp were retrieved.

Shortly after the arrest, a 39-year-old welder, Solomon Tettey, reportedly approached officers claiming ownership of the vehicles and consignment, alleging the shipment was bound for Nigeria.

He is also accused of attempting to bribe officers with GH₵100,000 to halt the investigation. Police say they pretended to accept the offer to gather evidence of the bribery attempt.

Investigators later confirmed that GH₵90,000 was transferred via mobile money, while GH₵10,000 was paid in cash, bringing the total alleged bribe to GH₵100,000.

With support from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and Odumase Police, Tettey was arrested, while two other suspects—Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey—were later picked up after reporting to the Regional Headquarters.

All suspects and exhibits have been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations and prosecution.

The Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and maintaining integrity within law enforcement, pledging continued operations against narcotics networks in the region.
