The Berekum Divisional Police Command has apprehended a 39-year-old man, identified as David Frimpong, a Berekum-based cannabis kingpin, for unlawful possession of a container of groundnut cake toffee ‘nkate cake’ suspected to be mixed with Indian hemp.
The suspect was arrested at Nyamebekyere, a suburb in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region.
According to a statement issued by the police, an intelligence-led operation led to the suspect’s arrest at his residence, a semi-completed house. Upon seeing the police, the suspect attempted to escape.
A search conducted on the premises uncovered 57 compressed slabs of suspected dried Indian hemp leaves, 195 wraps of suspected dried Indian hemp leaves, and three sacks of suspected dried Indian hemp leaves.
Additionally, a container of ‘groundnut cake’ toffee suspected to be mixed with Indian hemp, six pairs of scissors, 14 packs of cigarettes, and 190 wrapping papers were found.
The exhibits have been retained for forensic examination and evidence.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect is a dealer in narcotic drugs and has been distributing them in Berekum and its environs.
The suspect is currently in police custody pending further investigation and will face the full rigors of the law.
