The Accra Regional Police Command has issued a strong caution against the indiscriminate use of firearms during public and traditional festivities, warning that such conduct endangers lives and violates the law.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Command, addressed the media in Accra, where she condemned what she described as an alarming and dangerous trend involving the discharge of firearms at public and cultural events.
She described the practice as reckless, unlawful, and a serious threat to public safety.
According to Superintendent Obeng, the police have observed an uptick in the use of guns, including sophisticated weapons, during cultural celebrations.
She reminded the public that the possession and use of firearms without proper authorization is prohibited under Ghanaian law and attracts severe legal consequences.
Her warning comes in the wake of the tragic death of a young student, Fatima, a second-year student of Bimbilla Senior High School, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet during the Fire Festival in Bimbilla in the Northern Region.
The incident occurred on July 6 as a procession of celebrants made their way from the regent’s palace to the Wampu Dam for customary rites associated with the annual event.
Superintendent Obeng noted that while the police recognize the cultural significance of these festivals, public safety cannot be compromised.
The misuse of firearms, especially those loaded with live ammunition rather than traditional black powder, has raised serious concerns for law enforcement agencies.
The call for restraint comes as the country enters a season of heightened traditional festivities, including the upcoming Homowo festival celebrated by the Ga people in Accra.
These events often feature the ceremonial firing of muskets, but authorities say an increasing number of individuals are now introducing modern firearms into these settings.
Police are urging the public to support their efforts to maintain law and order by reporting individuals or groups in possession of unlicensed weapons or engaging in unauthorized shooting activities during such events.
Law enforcement agencies, the police say, will not hesitate to act decisively against violators to prevent further loss of life.
