An Adentan Circuit Court has sentenced a 32-year-old pastor and accountant, Edward Unicorn, to two years in prison for stealing GH₵40,433.50 from the Ghana Police Church.

Unicorn, who pleaded guilty with an explanation, confessed to using the funds to wager bets on an online gaming platform called Aviator.

He claimed to have been addicted to the game and had sought medical help but failed to follow through.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Anim Darko, Unicorn worked as the church’s accountant and was entrusted with managing its finances.

However, he misappropriated the funds, leaving the church with significant financial losses.

The court presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, directed Unicorn to pay GH₵5,000 and ordered that GH₵2,775 retrieved from him be returned to the Ghana Police Church.

Unicorn’s addiction to online betting has sparked concerns about the growing issue of gambling addiction in Ghana, particularly among young people.

Case Details:

Accused: Edward Unicorn, 32, pastor and accountant – Charge: Stealing – Amount embezzled: GH₵40,433.50 – Sentence: 2 years imprisonment – Additional penalties: Pay GH₵5,000, return GH₵2,775 to Ghana Police Church
