Police engage groups, community heads on violent extremism in Northern part of Ghana

The Ghana Police Service, through its Transformation Agenda in partnership with the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), a German non-profit organisation, has engaged ten (10) police officers and twenty (20) community leaders consisting of youth chiefs, representatives from human rights groups, traders' associations, some headmasters of senior high schools, and other stakeholders in the northern region at the Mma Bugri Lodge, Nalerigu.

The Ghana Police Service, through its Transformation Agenda in partnership with the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), a German non-profit organisation, has engaged ten (10) police officers and twenty (20) community leaders consisting of youth chiefs, representatives from human rights groups, traders’ associations, some headmasters of senior high schools, and other stakeholders in the northern region at the Mma Bugri Lodge, Nalerigu.

The engagement focused on violent extremism, crime, radicalization, and building positive peace. We also had discussions that led to more revelations on security concerns in the region.

Guests were educated and discussed knowledge of security and information of the area on violent extremism crime and how to combat radicalisation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr. Emmanuel Akonnor, Director of Research at the Research, Planning and Transformation Directorate of the Ghana Police Service in his opening remarks extended the well-wishes of the Inspector-General of Police to the guests and stated that the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) has partnered the Ghana Police Service for over ten years with sponsorship to ensure that the Police are professional and democratic, operates with rule of law and community-oriented.

He concluded that the HSF is committed to promoting peace, human rights, and development in West Africa.

The Northeast Regional Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police(ACP), Mr. Shaibu Abubakar Sadique Osei, welcomed participants to the programme and thereafter gave a brief on the General and on specific crimes within the jurisdiction.

He emphasised the need to continue to fight crime in his jurisdiction and entreated everyone to get involved.

He further stated that there were three hundred and four (304) cases reported in the year 2022 as compared to five hundred and nineteen (519) cases reported in the year 2021, showing a decrease of two hundred and fifteen (215) cases.

He further stated that the region has recorded One hundred and thirty-two (132) cases from January to July 2023. An indication that the crime rate has since 2021 been yearly reducing.
