Swift action by the Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol Team on Monday evening, June 2, 2025, foiled a potentially deadly robbery attempt on the Kumasi-Bibiani highway.
One suspected armed robber was shot dead during a firefight, while four others managed to flee into the night.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. between Ahwerewa and Esaase when five armed men ambushed two Sprinter minibuses, holding passengers at gunpoint. One of the suspects, armed with a pump-action shotgun, reportedly opened fire when the police arrived at the scene.
“The patrol team responded swiftly and bravely to the threat, returning fire and fatally injuring one of the armed men,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
“A medical officer at the Afari Government Hospital later confirmed the suspect’s death.”
According to DSP Ahianyo, the four other suspects fled into the surrounding area and are currently at large. “We believe some of the fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange,” he added.
“We are urging all medical practitioners and facilities to be vigilant and report anyone seeking treatment for such injuries to the nearest police station.”
The deceased has since been deposited at the Afari Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigation.
DSP Ahianyo commended the Nkawie patrol team for their courage and professionalism in preventing a robbery that could have resulted in significant loss of life and property.
“The Ashanti Regional Police Command is proud of the swift response of the officers, which brought the situation under control,” he stated.
He further called on members of the public to support the police by volunteering credible information that could assist in apprehending the remaining suspects.
“Our collective vigilance and cooperation are key to ensuring safety on our roads and in our communities,” DSP Ahianyo emphasized.
