The Winneba Divisional Police Command is investigating an attempted robbery on the premises of MRB Rural Bank, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025.
According to the police, the bank’s alarm system was triggered at about 1:00 a.m., drawing the attention of a patrol team on duty. Sensing unusual activity, the team rushed to the bank and was immediately met with sporadic gunfire from a group of suspected armed robbers.
After a brief exchange of fire, the gang managed to escape the scene, abandoning one pump-action gun and other implements believed to have been intended for the break-in.

A specialized team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, led by ASP James Atampugri, was dispatched to Winneba to support investigations. Upon arrival, they were received at the Winneba Divisional Headquarters by ACP Ibrahim Opoku, the Divisional Commander, and his Crime Officer, who briefed them on the incident.
Crime scene investigators recovered a pump-action gun and an empty cartridge, which have been retained as evidence. Initial investigations suggest that the attempted robbery was carried out by a gang of about five armed men who sought to force entry into the bank’s vault.
Police say the swift intervention of the patrol team disrupted the gang’s plans.
Investigators have linked the group’s mode of operation to earlier robberies targeting rural banks in other parts of the country.
Intelligence gathered indicates that the gang may be operating from Kumasi, where a team of surveillance officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit is currently stationed to trace their movements and possible hideouts.
