Traders at the Alteration Lane near the Railway Line at Kantamanto are counting their losses after fire destroyed their shops on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service have commenced investigations into the inferno that gutted parts of the Kantamanto Market destroying shops and property and running into millions of Ghana Cedis. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The fire reportedly started at about 4 am on Tuesday destroying more than 500 shops. Those who were affected are mostly traders of second-hand clothing, shoes and bags. Others include alteration tailors, and some warehouses among others.

According to a report, four years ago, traders at the entrance of the market were affected. Two years later, those in the middle of the market had their share of the fire outbreak. The latest incident affected those at the tail end of the Kantamanto market.

The victims lamented the huge losses as most of them had restocked to meet the demands of the Christmas festivities. They called for support to enable them to reestablish their businesses.

As the traders counted their losses, scavengers were busily at work. Details of the affected traders have been presented to the Central Police Station for support. The Ghana National Fire Service is investigating the course of the fire.
