The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police service says, the increasing rate of Road Related deaths in recent days is born by Ghanaians failure to accept the Mandatory Towing Levy which was proposed by the Government.
The MTTD Officer in-charge of Research, Training and Education, Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng said majority of road related deaths recorded were caused by broken down vehicles that are left on the road.
Statistically, Ghana has recorded 5,460 accident cases within first five months in 2021.
Out of the total cases, 6,967 people were injured and death toll has Jumped to 1,250 between January and May 2021.
It will be recalled that, Government in 2012 after the passage of the L.I 2180 proposed Mandatory Towing Levy to make sure all broken down vehicles on the roads can be towed to ensure smooth running of motorists but the proposal was met with public outcry which impeded the operationalisation of the proposal.
Supt. Alexander Kwaku Obeng responding to the delay of the proposal said, “Ghanaians should be blamed over the rising death toll on our roads.”
He added that, the MTTD will play it part to ensure discipline on the road but Ghanaians will continue to loose their lives if Mandatory Towing Levy remained abolished.
