Police in the Bono East Region have arrested six suspects and recovered GH₵ 300,000 following a swift intervention on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway on Sunday night.

The suspects—Abdul Sadat Ali, 24; Samad Issahaka, 24; Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26—were detained after an insider plot to rob a businessman backfired.

According to the Ghana Police Service, officers on duty at the Portor Police Barrier under the Kintampo Police Division received intelligence at around 8:30 pm on July 19 that a robbery was underway a few metres from their post. Personnel moved to the scene, causing four of the armed men to flee into nearby bushes.

Police immediately secured the area and apprehended Abdul Sadat Ali, who was driving a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.

Interrogation of the driver led to the identification and subsequent arrest of Samad Issahaka, the driver of a Kia Rhino registered AS 7337-23.

Investigative findings revealed that the owner of the Kia Rhino, 35-year-old Yahaya Seidu, had instructed Issahaka to drive him to Buipe to purchase cattle. Knowing his employer was carrying a substantial amount of cash, Issahaka tipped off the gang, who trailed the vehicle all the way from Offinso in the Ashanti Region.

Armed with a toy pistol, the gang intercepted the victims shortly after they passed the Portor Police Barrier and forcibly took GH₵ 300,000 in cash.

Officers from the Police Counter Terrorism unit joined the local patrol team to comb the surrounding bushland, successfully tracking down and arresting the four fleeing suspects.

A search of the group yielded the full amount of stolen cash.

During police questioning, the suspects confessed to trailing the target from Offinso after receiving information from Issahaka. All six men remain in custody assisting with further investigations.

Commending the officers for their rapid response, Regional Commander DCOP Shaibu A. Sadique-Osei praised the operational unit for their tactical efficiency.

“The Ghana Police Service commends the alertness and professionalism of the personnel on duty, as well as the Counter Terrorism team for their support in effecting the arrests,” DCOP Sadique-Osei stated.
