An alleged attempt to bribe police officers with $20,000 to evade arrest was flatly rejected on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, after officers of the Volta Regional Police Command intercepted a vehicle transporting a large consignment of suspected narcotics along the Accra–Sogakope corridor.
The interception followed intelligence-led operations that led police to stop a black Liberty Jeep, registered in Nigeria with number FKJ 692 KF, at the Kpotame barrier between Ada Junction (Kasseh) in the Greater Accra Region and Sogakope in the South Tongu Municipality.
The vehicle was being driven by a 46-year-old Nigerian national, identified as Charles Adenkule, and was reportedly heading toward Nigeria.
During a detailed search of the vehicle, officers retrieved ten parcels of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, concealed within the vehicle.
The suspected cocaine is estimated to have a street value of approximately GH¢1,032,650. Police also uncovered about half a kilogram of compressed dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, hidden behind the inner lining of the vehicle.
Senior police sources at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters disclosed that the operation was mounted on the basis of actionable intelligence received earlier in the day.
Upon receiving the information, the Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Wisdom Akorli, authorised the deployment of a joint task force made up of personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), and officers from the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
At about 6:30 p.m., the suspect vehicle arrived at the checkpoint and was signalled to stop. Officers conducted a methodical search, which led to the discovery of the concealed substances.

Police sources indicated that the manner in which the drugs were packaged and hidden suggested deliberate efforts to evade detection.
Investigators say that shortly after the discovery, the driver allegedly offered the officers $20,000 in cash in an attempt to secure his release and avoid further action. The officers declined the offer and proceeded with the arrest in line with standard operational procedures.
The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the Liberty Jeep has been impounded at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho.
The seized substances are expected to be forwarded to the forensic laboratory for scientific analysis as part of ongoing investigations.
