Several police officers stationed in the Bawku enclave have threatened to resign if their requests for transfers are not granted, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has revealed.
According to the Minister, some officers, including those manning checkpoints, have been shot and killed over the past three months amid ongoing disturbances in the area.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 10, Muntaka appealed to Members of Parliament from affected communities to help create a safer and more supportive environment for security personnel.
“I have had instances where some officers say that if you don’t transfer me from that area, I will rather resign. Why? Because the citizens themselves over there are not helpful. People have the courage to openly fire at police officers and even kill them at checkpoints. At one point, the IGP had to withdraw all police officers from checkpoints,” he said.
Muntaka added that instead of withdrawing officers entirely, measures such as positioning them with armoured vehicles have been implemented. He called on MPs to collaborate with security personnel to establish a secure and enabling environment for them to carry out their duties effectively.
