The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into an incident at the Metro TV premises in Accra on the morning of Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
According to a police statement, officers accompanied a court bailiff and a representative of Vodacom Business (Ghana) Limited to enforce a court order against Metro TV.
However, the circumstances surrounding the incident, which disrupted a live broadcast, remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses reported that armed policemen in uniform attempted to forcibly enter the studio during the live airing of Good Morning Ghana, a popular morning show hosted by Dr. Randy Abbey.
The program featured panelists Kwesi Pratt and Richard Asante Yeboah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The disruption reportedly led to a scuffle that injured two Metro TV security guards. While the police have not provided detailed reasons for the intrusion, it occurred as panelists were discussing issues related to doctored audio recordings.
Dr. Abbey and the panelists were reportedly still in the studio as the incident unfolded. Metro TV has yet to release a statement, and the injured guards are currently receiving medical attention.
The police have urged Metro TV staff and management to remain calm and cooperate with their ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked widespread concerns about press freedom and journalist safety, particularly during live broadcasts.
