The Bekwai District Headquarters of the Ashanti South Regional Police (ASHSR) is investigating an attempted armed robbery incident reported on Wednesday, July 31, 2025, at Boni near Anwiankwanta in the Ashanti Region.

At approximately 4:40 p.m., James Nkrumah, popularly known as Alex, and owner of Alex Mining Company Limited, lodged a formal complaint with the Bekwai District Police. He reported that at around 4:00 p.m. the same day, he received a distress call from workers at his mining site indicating that a group of armed men had mounted a roadblock on the route leading to the site.

According to the report, the robbers opened fire upon seeing a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GW 4366-16, which was transporting gold concentrate—commonly referred to as “black”—from the site to the residence.

The vehicle was being driven by 43-year-old Roger Abarika. A passenger on board, Williams Opoku Asamoah, also known as Akwasi, sustained chest injuries from debris after the robbers shattered the vehicle’s front windscreen.

A security officer on board the vehicle, armed with a pump-action shotgun, engaged the assailants in a gun battle. One of the robbers, who was wielding an AK-47 assault rifle, was fatally shot during the exchange. His two accomplices managed to flee into a nearby bush and remain at large.

A combined team of investigators from the Bekwai District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Regional Operation Patrol Team responded swiftly to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers discovered the lifeless body of the deceased suspect lying in a supine position.

A search at the scene uncovered the following items:

One AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. AZ 7115-1999), two magazines containing 30 and 27 rounds of ammunition, one Huawei mobile phone, a driver’s license bearing the name Abeyoog Abdullah, cash amounting to GHC185.00, five spent BB cartridges, and one live cartridge.

Further inspection revealed that the deceased had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the left eye. His body was later transported to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Meanwhile, the injured passenger, Williams Opoku Asamoah, was visited by police officers at the Abenkyiman Hospital in Anwiankwanta, where he was treated and subsequently discharged.

Police have launched a manhunt for the two fleeing suspects. The Bekwai District Command is appealing to the public to provide any information that may lead to their arrest.
