The Ghana Police Service’s Special Operations Team has arrested 32 suspects and seized large quantities of suspected narcotics during a major intelligence-led operation in the Tamale Metropolis on Monday, December 1, 2025.

The operation also resulted in the death of an armed suspect who allegedly opened fire on officers during the sweep.

Led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the team began its mission with a courtesy call to Sheikh Basha, leader of Masjidul Bayan, to formally announce their presence and seek prayers for a safe and successful operation.

“We are here to combat robbery, attacks on mobile money vendors, rape, illicit drug peddling and usage, and other crimes of national concern,” ASP Jalil told the religious leaders, who commended the Police Service for its continued anti-crime efforts.

Following the visit, the team moved to Sanzhirigu, where a house reportedly operating as a drug hub was raided. Five suspects were arrested, and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp along with Koffex cough syrup were confiscated.

Acting on further intelligence, officers then targeted the Aboabo Forest enclave, known for criminal activity including robbery and drug trafficking. The coordinated operation led to the arrest of 27 suspects, along with narcotics, opioid tablets, six motorbikes, and three mobile phones believed to be stolen.

The operation turned violent when armed men confronted officers and opened fire. Police returned fire in self-defence, resulting in the death of one suspect, who was later pronounced dead at Tamale Teaching Hospital. ASP Jalil explained that prior intelligence had confirmed the criminals were heavily armed and prepared to resist arrest.

“The officers acted professionally under life-threatening circumstances and prevented further harm to residents,” he stated.

All arrested suspects are currently in custody at the District Charge Office and Sakasaka Police Station. Seized narcotics have been submitted for forensic analysis, while the motorbikes and phones are being held for further investigations.

The Special Operations Team, comprising 50 officers and eight service vehicles, including a Black Maria, will continue operations across the Tamale Metropolis to curb rising violent crime in the Northern Region.
