Police visit Atico accident victims

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, accompanied by the Director- General Welfare, DCOP Mrs Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, Director General Public Affairs Directorates, ACP Mr. Kwesi Ofori and the Deputy Accra Regional Commander, DCOP Mr Afriyie Sakyi and some other senior officers on Saturday, January 15,2022, paid a visit to Atico accident victims and the families affected.

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, accompanied by the Director- General Welfare, DCOP Mrs Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, Director General Public Affairs Directorates, ACP Mr. Kwesi Ofori and the Deputy Accra Regional Commander, DCOP Mr Afriyie Sakyi and some other senior officers on Saturday, January 15,2022, paid a visit to Atico accident victims and the families affected.

In a release, the team first visited the accident victim, Mr. Kofi Mensah, who is on admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The team interacted with the doctors and the families of the victims. The IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare informed the family that, the police would bear the full cost of the treatment of the victim.

From the hospital, the team went to Mataheko and visited the second accident victim, Mr John Mensah Sarbah at his home. As for him, a police vehicle was put at the victim’s disposal to convey him to and from the hospital until he has recovered fully.

Again, the team moved to Mataheko Asoredanho, to commiserate with the family of the late Dora Owusua, who lost her life while seeking treatment after the accident occurred.

The police administration assured the bereaved family of every support they would need towards the burial and funeral rites of the deceased .

The driver in charge of the vehicle, General Corporal Mahmood Abdulai, was also visited at Kasoa No 50276.

The team assured him of relevant medical care until he has fully recovered. Families and victims expressed their profound gratitude to the IGP and the Ghana Police Service for their love and support they have shown to them.

According to the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the police would conduct thorough investigations into the case and thus, seek justice for all the victims.

He also noted that, laison officers have been appointed to coordinate arrangements between the police and the affected families.

It was stated that, preliminary investigations so far into the accident indicates that the police officer No 50276 General Corporal Mahmood Abdulai of RDF Accra Region was driving a Toyota Vitz taxi from Mallam direction towards Accra.

On reaching a section of the Dr. K A Busia highway opposite Atico junction, he failed to exercise due care and attention, and as a result, the vehicle veered off the road, onto the pavement at the roadside and knocked down three victims, John Mensah Sarbah, Dora Owusua and yet to be identified male adult who were standing In the pavement.

The three victims sustained injuries and were rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention. However, one of them, Dora Owusua died while receiving treatment .
