The Ghana Police Service’s application for an injunction to halt the vigil has been withdrawn, and the protest route will be changed from Revolution Square, opposite the Jubilee House.
On Friday, May 23, the case was withdrawn in court to allow organisers to change the location of the protest.
However, speaking to the media following the court’s decision, Selorm Dramani Dzramado, one of the protest organisers, clarified that they had decided to change the location of the vigil in accordance with the Public Order Act.
“We told the public why we chose the Revolution Square because it holds a certain historical significance and its proximity to the Presidency so the police insistence on us changing the venue, we complied with Article 41(i) of the Constitution which says that the citizens of Ghana must always cooperate with the lawful agencies in the maintenance of law and order to write a letter to the police to announce the change of venue and date”, Selorm said.
Selorm also hinted that the court has yet to approve the start of the vigil because there will be a meeting with the Ghana Police Service to discuss the entire process again.
