The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has emphasized the need to insulate Ghana’s education system from political interference, urging policymakers to prioritize long-term educational policies over short-term political interests.

Speaking at a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) at the Manhyia Palace, the revered monarch stressed that a well-structured education system is crucial for national development.

He, therefore, called for a comprehensive policy framework to guide political actors in their decisions regarding education.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II further directed the regional education authorities to present a detailed report on challenges facing basic and secondary schools, their underlying causes, and potential solutions.

He underscored the importance of addressing these issues promptly, warning that failure to do so could have long-term repercussions for the country’s progress.

“The education sector deserves our full attention. If we fail to tackle its challenges today, we will face greater consequences in the future,” he stated.

His call for reforms comes at a time when the government has set up a committee to review aspects of Ghana’s education system. The Asantehene believes such initiatives must be driven by national interest rather than political motivations.

As part of the visit, the Ashanti Regional Directorate of Education joined in the celebration of the second Awukudae Festival at the Manhyia Palace and made a donation of ¢300,000 towards the Heal Komfo Anokye Project, an initiative aimed at improving healthcare services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Dr. William Kwame Amankra Appiah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, expressed appreciation for the Asantehene’s continued support for education, particularly through his scholarship scheme. He noted that the King’s initiative has greatly contributed to educational advancement in the region.

Additionally, Dr. Appiah outlined some of the measures the directorate has implemented to complement the King’s vision of enhancing literacy and educational development.

He further assured Otumfuo Osei Tutu II of his office’s unwavering commitment to working in alignment with the Asantehene’s efforts to improve education in the region.
