Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, has sentenced a 32-year-old porter, Ali Amidu, to 39 months in prison by the Circuit Court in Accra for stealing a motorbike valued at GH¢14,500.

He was handed 15 months for conspiracy to commit a crime and 24 months for stealing. However, the court ruled that the sentences should run concurrently.

Amidu pleaded guilty to the charges under Sections 23(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Meanwhile, his two alleged accomplices, Nabiru Yashawu and Awudu, remain at large.

Background of case

According to court records, the complainant, Ransford Owusu Afriyie, an Okada rider residing at Shukura Market, reported that on February 27, 2025, at about 3:00 AM, Amidu and his accomplice, NabiruYashawu, stole his black unregistered Royal 150 motorbike from his compound.

Following the theft, the accused and his accomplice sold the motorbike at Agbogbloshie for GH¢4,000.00 to a third party identified as Awudu, who is also at large.

The complainant, along with four others, apprehended Amidu and handed him over to the Shukura Police.

During police investigations, Amidu admitted to the crime and identified Yashawu as his accomplice.

However, he failed to assist authorities in locating either Yashawu or Awudu, the alleged buyer of the stolen motorbike.

The court found Amidu guilty based on his own confession and the evidence presented. Despite the stolen motorbike being sold at a fraction of its value, Amidu was unable to help law enforcement recover it or apprehend the other suspects.

The case remains open as police continue to search for Yashawu and Awudu.
