The 19-kilometre Accra-Tema motorway has seen heavy traffic jams in recent weeks due to several potholes on the Tema to Accra stretch of the motorway.
The motorway is a major highway which links Tema, Ashaiman and its environs to the capital city, Accra.
This highway has been in use for over two decades and continues to serve road users in the country.
The motorway is believed to be a free-flowing road without any sort of traffic jam unless there is an accident on the motorway.
However, this has not been the case for some weeks now.
Several potholes on the motorway prevent road users especially drivers from going the normal speed on the motorway, hence causing traffic.
Some months ago, the ministry of roads and highway did some maintenance work on the stretch but what was done seems to be just 1% of maintenance needed to be done.
Users of the motorway have to be in traffic for at least ten to twenty minutes every morning just because they have to slow down when approaching these potholes.
Drivers and passengers get frustrated and vent their anger on authorities anytime they use the motorway.
Meanwhile, the Accra-Tema motorway extension project will see a 10-lane 19.5km motorway (4 lanes of reinforced concrete freeway, 6 lanes of urban Highway), reconstruction of Tetteh Quarshie to Apenkwa (5.7 km), remodelling of Tetteh Quarshie, Apenkwa and Achimota Interchanges, construction of 5 new interchanges (Lashibi, Abattoir, Teshie Link, Fiesta Royale and Neoplan junction), 14No. pedestrian footbridges, toll plazas and streetlights as stated in a press release by the Ministry of Roads and Highway in August last year is yet to commence
