President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ.), Deputy Director-General of Prisons in charge of Finance and Administration, as the new Director-General of Prisons.
The announcement was made on Friday March 14, 2025. She succeeds Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir, who was appointed to the role on October 28, 2021, by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Her appointment makes her the second woman to hold the top position in the Ghana Prisons Service.
With over 37 years of service, Baffoe-Bonnie brings a wealth of experience to the role. She joined the Prisons Service in 1987 as a recruit with an Advanced Level Certificate and steadily rose through the ranks. After earning her first degree from the University of Ghana in 1993, she completed cadet training in 1994, joining the Senior Officer Corps.
Throughout her career, she held several leadership positions, including Director of Prisons Health, Technical & Services; Director of Services; Director of Operations; and Deputy Director-General (Finance and Administration). Her impact spans prison management, policy development, staff welfare, and legal reforms. As Chief Legal Officer, she spearheaded the review of the Prison Service and Parole Bills and contributed to regulations governing general administration and discipline.
During her tenure at James Camp Prison, she championed reforms that enhanced reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts, making the facility a model within the prison system.
Her leadership extended beyond prison walls during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she advocated for national and international support to safeguard inmates and staff, leading Ghana Prisons to maintain a zero-death record during the crisis.
Baffoe-Bonnie’s passion for innovation drove her to introduce organic farming to reduce post-harvest losses and implement skill training and creative arts programs to aid inmate reformation.
She also prioritized staff welfare and career development while pushing for income-generating projects to reduce reliance on government funding.
Academically, she holds a Barrister-at-Law and Qualifying Certificate from the Ghana School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with Social Work from the University of Ghana.
She further enriched her expertise through international training in areas such as international criminal law, corporate governance, and strategic leadership. She also contributed to the United Nations Mission in Liberia as a planner, advisor, and mentor.
Her remarkable career has earned her several accolades, including the Female Pillar of Modern Public Service Award, the HD LeadHERS Xperience Award for Women in Leadership (2023), and the Ghana Women’s Award for Outstanding Female Prisons Officer (2013).
Married with children, Baffoe-Bonnie enjoys painting, basketball, cooking, dancing, traveling, and spending time with children.
She embodies professionalism, integrity, and service delivery, with a vision to transform Ghana’s prison system into a modern correctional institution that contributes meaningfully to the economy while ensuring public safety.
Her appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for the Ghana Prisons Service, as she brings bold ideas to expand the Service’s focus on agriculture and creative arts as tools for reformation and development.
