President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven Justices of the Court of Appeal for consideration and possible appointment to the Supreme Court of Ghana.
The nominations were made in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution and were formally announced in a letter dated April 29, 2025, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
According to the letter, the President has nominated the following Justices:
Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
Justice Senyo Dzamefe
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
Justice Philip Bright Mensah
Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
“Pursuant to Article 144(2) of the Constitution of Ghana 1992, His Excellency the President has nominated the following Justices of the Court of Appeal to be considered for appointment to the Supreme Court,” the letter stated.
Dr. Callistus Mahama added, “Attached are their Curricula Vitae. I trust that the Council will expedite action on their considerations.”
The nominations are expected to be forwarded to the Judicial Council and the Council of State for advice, before being submitted to Parliament for approval, as stipulated by the constitution.
The appointments, if approved, will bolster the composition of Ghana’s apex court with a diverse mix of experience and expertise from the appellate bench.
