President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo after determining that there is enough evidence to investigate petitions accusing her of misconduct.
The suspension, which took effect immediately, follows the President’s consultation with the Council of State and the establishment of a five-member committee to look into the allegations, in line with Article 146 of the Constitution.
The committee will be chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang and will include Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzissah of the University of Ghana.
The President’s action was announced in a statement signed by his spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The Chief Justice will remain suspended until the committee completes its work and reports its findings.
