President John Dramani Mahama will swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice today, completing a transition that began earlier this year when he assumed the role in an acting capacity.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s elevation follows Parliament’s approval of his nomination on November 13, where he secured 163 votes in favour and 69 against.

His confirmation came after an appearance before the Appointments Committee on November 10, during which he outlined plans for an open-door approach and pledged to uphold judicial independence.

He also stressed the need to expand access to justice and promised leadership that welcomes engagement across political lines.

The President nominated him on September 23, describing him as a jurist whose “wealth of experience and long service on the Bench” make him suited for the position.

His career has taken him through the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, marking him as one of the most seasoned members of the judiciary.

His nomination followed months of acting service after the suspension and eventual dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on April 22.

Members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament who supported his appointment praised his calm temperament and broad institutional memory, while the Minority argued that the Chief Justice position had not been conclusively rendered vacant given that former Chief Justice Torkornoo is in court challenging her removal from the judiciary’s top job.

Today’s ceremony is expected to usher in a full tenure for Justice Baffoe-Bonnie at a time when the judiciary faces demands for improved efficiency and deeper transparency.

His commitments during vetting indicate a focus on rebuilding public confidence through steady, inclusive leadership.

Once sworn in, he steps into the office with a mandate shaped both by his long service and by the expectations raised during his vetting in Parliament.
