President Akufo Addo has authorized the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Army and Ghana Police Service to tackle illegal small-scale mining, following increasing calls for urgent action.
This decision came after an emergency national security meeting to evaluate the environmental impact of galamsey on river bodies and ecosystems.
On September 11, organized labour issued a stern warning to the government, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of the month if decisive measures are not taken to address the escalating galamsey crisis. Additionally, other groups, including religious leaders, have expressed similar concerns.
