Prez Mahama promotes new Defence and Service Chiefs of Ghana Armed Forces

President John Dramani Mahama, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has announced a new leadership team for the military.

Effective March 24, 2025, the President, acting on the advice of the Armed Forces Council, has promoted the incoming Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, and the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The appointments come as part of preparations for a leadership transition within the military, ensuring continuity in the nation’s defense operations.

New Military Leadership

  1. Major General William Agyapong – Chief of Defence Staff

  2. Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Chief of Army Staff

  3. Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing – Chief of Naval Staff

  4. Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong – Chief of Air Staff

  5. Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai – Chief of Staff

President Mahama extended his best wishes to the newly appointed Chiefs, emphasizing the need for loyalty, diligence, and patriotic service. He expressed confidence in their ability to work together as a unified team to safeguard the nation’s security and interests.

These appointments, made in consultation with the Council of State, mark a significant step in strengthening the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces as the country continues to navigate evolving security challenges.
