The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has strongly condemned the assault on Mr. Samuel Addo, a journalist with the Class Media Group, describing the incident as a blatant violation of press freedom and democratic principles.
According to PRINPAG, Mr. Addo was attacked while performing his professional duties, an act the Association says undermines Ghanas constitutional order and threatens the critical role of the media in a democratic society.
In a statement issued on January 5, 2026, PRINPAG noted that the attack constitutes a direct breach of Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the freedom and independence of the media. The Association warned that intimidation, obstruction, or violence against journalists erodes public confidence and weakens democratic governance.
PRINPAG has therefore called on the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of the Interior to initiate a prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident. It stressed that the perpetrators must be identified and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to future attacks on media practitioners.
The Association further urged security agencies and the general public to recognize journalists as key partners in nation-building, emphasizing that media professionals play a vital role in informing the public and holding state institutions accountable.
Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom, PRINPAG expressed solidarity with Mr. Addo and journalists across the country who continue to work under increasingly challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions.
PRINPAG pledged to continue advocating for the safety, rights, and independence of media practitioners, stressing that a free, safe, and independent press remains essential to the protection and advancement of Ghanas democracy.
