The Prison Officers’ Wives Association (PROWA) has inaugurated its newly elected National Executives at a ceremony held at the Ghana Prisons Service Headquarters Conference Room in Accra.
The event was attended by the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Esq., together with the Director of Prisons in charge of Services and Prisons Business, Mr. Francis Selorm Hagbe; the Director of Prisons in charge of Welfare and Inmate Treatment, Mrs. Millicent Owusu; the Regional Commander and Commanding Officer, DDP Edward Ashun; and the Chief Legal Officer, DDP Charles Ameyaw, Esq.
In her farewell remarks, delivered on behalf of the outgoing President, Mrs. Mabel Adu-Awuku drew inspiration from Proverbs Chapter 3, urging the incoming executives to rely on divine wisdom in the discharge of their responsibilities. She encouraged the new leadership to serve with humility, dedication, and integrity.
The newly elected executives were subsequently sworn into office by DDP Charles Ameyaw, Esq. During the ceremony, they took the oath of office and pledged to uphold the constitution, rules, and values of the association while working diligently to advance its objectives.
In her acceptance speech, the newly inducted National President, Mrs. Esther Owusu Ababio, on behalf of the executive body, pledged their unwavering commitment to the growth and development of PROWA. She appealed to members to support the new leadership through prayers, unity, and active participation in the association’s programmes and activities.
Delivering the keynote address, the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Esq., described the inauguration as a significant milestone in the history of the association. She expressed profound appreciation to the outgoing executives for their dedication and invaluable service to PROWA over the years.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that behind every successful officer is a supportive family and noted that Officers’ Welfare constitutes the first pillar of the Service’s Think Prisons 360 agenda. She announced several welfare-focused initiatives aimed at empowering officers’ spouses and their children, including an upcoming market project specifically designed for prison officers’ wives.
The Director-General also highlighted the establishment of a nursery facility that will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., providing both childcare support and employment opportunities. In addition, she outlined financial and educational support avenues available to officers’ families, including access to microfinance and small loans through MASLOC, as well as scholarship opportunities through GETFund.
Addressing the challenge of low participation among spouses in association activities, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie urged the new executives to intensify membership mobilisation efforts. She stressed that every member is important regardless of status and encouraged inclusivity within the association.
She concluded by calling on PROWA members to remain positive ambassadors of the Ghana Prisons Service and to continue serving as a strong support system for their husbands and their families.
