The Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), has called on prison officers in the Ashanti Region to actively engage community stakeholders and rally strategic support for ongoing prison development initiatives, particularly the “DG’s Kitchen Support Project.”
She made the call during a briefing session held at the Kumasi Central Prison on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, shortly after arriving in Kumasi to begin a three-day working tour of the region.
The visit, which runs from Wednesday, July 23 to Friday, July 25, forms part of the Director General’s broader efforts to assess operations, motivate personnel, and advance ongoing agricultural projects within the prison system.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie was received at the VVIP section of the Nana Agyeman Prempeh I International Airport by Ashanti Regional Commander of Prisons, DDP James Mwinyelle, the Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture, DOP Ali Kwaku Ababio, and Officers-in-Charge (OICs) of all seven prison establishments in the region.
In the meeting, the OICs and DDP Mwinyelle briefed the Director General on current security conditions, institutional challenges, and progress made under the Kitchen Support Project—a flagship initiative introduced by Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie to improve food security and nutrition for inmates through poultry, fish, and vegetable farming.
The Director General commended the commitment of the officers and urged them to take a more proactive stance by mobilizing local support from individuals, organizations, and traditional authorities to sustain and expand the impact of the project.
As part of her tour, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie is expected to pay courtesy calls on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.
She will also hold durbars with staff and officers at all seven prison establishments in the region, namely Kumasi Central, Kumasi Female, Manhyia Local, Obuasi Local, Amanfrom Camp, Ejura Camp, and Ahinsan Camp prisons.
The tour is part of ongoing efforts by the Prisons Service leadership to monitor operations, boost staff morale, and promote innovative rehabilitation and welfare interventions across the country’s correctional facilities.
