Prominent Ghanaian author and poet, Professor Ama Ata Aidoo has passed away at age 81.
The renowned writer died in the early hours of Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
According to the family of the playwright, she passed away after a short illness at home.
She was born on March 3, 1942, in Abeadzi Kyiakor, near Saltpond, in the Central Region of Ghana and has through her excellent writing skills, published many books including The Dilemma of a Ghost, Anowa, No Sweetness Here And Other Stories, Changes, among others.
Her work saw her receive many several awards including the 1992 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book (Africa) for her novel Changes.
She was the Minister of Education in Ghana under the Jerry Rawlings administration. In 2000, she established the Mbaasem Foundation to promote and support the work of African women writers.
