On September 17, 2024, concerned citizens will take to the streets for the “Enough is Enough, Protect Our Vote” demonstration, demanding a credible, transparent, and accurate voters register.

This collective action seeks to ensure the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process and safeguard the fundamental right to vote.

David Kumi Addo, Executive Director of CARE Ghana, emphasized that every vote counts and a flawed or compromised voters register undermines democracy, denying individuals their right to vote. Recent concerns over the electoral roll’s integrity have sparked widespread alarm, with clear evidence of errors, omissions, and inconsistencies threatening to disenfranchise countless citizens.

CARE Ghana considers this “wholly unacceptable and a dangerous threat to our democratic values.” The organization’s decision to proceed with the protest is grounded in principles of protecting voting rights, good electoral governance, electoral accountability, human rights, participatory democracy, and transparency.

The flaws in the provisional voter’s register could disenfranchise thousands of eligible Ghanaians, undermining the right to vote freely and fairly. The credibility of Ghana’s elections is non-negotiable, and the refusal to audit the register casts doubt on the Electoral Commission’s commitment to conducting a free and fair election.

CARE Ghana asserts that a flawed register will produce a flawed election and urges the Electoral Commission to ensure no Ghanaian is left behind or denied their constitutional right to participate. The organization calls for an immediate audit to purge the voter’s register of lapses, safeguarding the sanctity of the 2024 elections.

CARE Ghana’s participation in the demonstration reaffirms their commitment to protecting every eligible Ghanaian’s right to vote. They stand in solidarity with those demanding a credible register, emphasizing that “a credible voters register is not a privilege; it is a non-negotiable right for the integrity of our elections and the legitimacy of our elected leaders.”

The demonstration is scheduled for September 17, 2024. Citizens are encouraged to join and demand a transparent and accurate voters register for free and fair elections in Ghana.
