The Ghana Police Service has announced routes for a planned three-day protest from October 3-5, 2024, organized by Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey.
A group announced to stage a three-day protest, demanding the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters and calling for the immediate freedom of Democracy Hub activists who were arrested and detained last week.
Organized under the slogans “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,”, the event also seeks to denounce illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which has been a long-standing environmental and social issue in Ghana.
According to the Police, the procession will begin at Okponglo, near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, and end at the Accra Sports Stadium car park, passing through key locations such as Shiashie, Airport Traffic Light, Ridge Hospital, and Parliament House.
The statement continued that after an engagement with the organizers, the agreed routes for the demonstration shall begin from Okponglo, near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, as their converging point, through the Okponglo Traffic Light, towards Shiashie/Standard Authority Traffic Light, through Shangrila to Airport Traffic Light and turn right to Association International School, through the National Service Secretariat and merge onto Kawukudi Traffic Intersection, through Kanda Highway to Accra High School Junction, through the Electoral Commission Office, Ridge Hospital, through the AU Roundabout to the Parliament House, through Osu Cemetery, and finally end at the Accra Sports Stadium car park.
The Police reminded organizers of their responsibilities under the Public Order Act, including liability for damage to public property and maintaining order.
The Police also outlined their responsibilities, which include directing event routes, dispersing crowds to prevent breaches of peace, and closing streets or erecting barriers to preserve public order.
The Ghana Police Service assures the public that sufficient security measures are in place to maintain law and order during and after the demonstration.
