The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has dared the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) to prove with evidence that, they will abolish Free Senior High School (SHS) program if they win power.
She threw this challenge during her campaign tour to Akyem-Tafo in the Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern Region after the majority caucus in Parliament disclosed that, the minority (NDC) is not in favour of the passage of the Free SHS bill to be presented to the government.
Professor Naana Jane vehemently denied the claims and explained that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will review the program to tackle the challenges it is facing.
“Anybody who has evidence that John Mahama had said anywhere that he will cancel Free SHS should provide it. If the person is unable to do so, let no one take that person seriously. We haven’t said anything like that.During our time, did you ever hear of double track? What we have said repeatedly is that there are challenges and these challenges ought to be be reviewed,” she explained
Professor Jane further emphasized the the NDC’s track record in the education sector to debunk claims alleging that, the party will cancel the free education program.
“We started the progressively free SHS because we knew paying fees was a burden for parents. However, some parents could afford it whilst others could not. Should such children be denied the opportunity to go to school? During our time, we took care of their shoes, and bags among others and nobody ever heard about shortage of books. If anybody wakes up today claiming that the NDC is against Free SHS, the person doesn’t know what he is saying,” Prof. Jane stated.
