The University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG), has urged all of its member institutions across the country to prioritize the security of students when they travel for their field trips.

This comes after some levels 300 and 400 of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) were attacked by armed robbers on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The incident, which occurred while the students were returning from a trip to BUI Power Authority around 7:00 p.m. near Boffourkrom in the Sunyani West Municipality, led to the death of one of the students identified as Abdul Aziz Issah with six others sustaining injuries.

In a press statement dated April 19, 2024, USAG, emphasized the need for security for students in the future to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

“This should serve as a wake-up call to all member institutions to ensure that students who go on field trips are given Police security or escorts,” part of the statement read.

USAG commiserated with the family of the deceased while expressing its commitment to the injured students.

“We mourn the loss of one of our fellow students and extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Words cannot express the pain and sorrow we feel, and we stand with you in solidarity and support.”

Following the incident, the police arrested one suspect in connection with the robbery, while on manhunt for the other accomplices.
