The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has directed Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to present a detailed timeline within five days for addressing the ongoing water crisis in the Krobo area.
This directive follows a joint petition submitted by two youth groups, Kloma Gbi and Kloma Hengme, highlighting the dire situation in affected communities.
In a letter dated 14th January 2025 and signed by Regional Manager Kesewaa Apenteng-Addo, PURC also tasked GWL with outlining both immediate and long-term measures to resolve the water supply issues.
This move comes after over six months of water shortages caused by damage to underground pipes during road construction on the Somanya-Odumase-Kpong highway.
To further assess the situation, a team from PURC is set to visit the affected communities today. A community engagement will take place at 10:30 am at the Atua Hospital Junction durbar ground.
Residents, opinion leaders, assembly members, and representatives of the petitioning groups are expected to attend. The meeting aims to gather critical insights to prevent potential communal unrest.
The water crisis has left communities such as Sawer, Atua, Kodjonya, and Odumase South without access to treated water, leading to mounting frustration among residents.
According to reports, residents accuse GWL and General Construction and Development Limited, the company responsible for the roadworks, of neglecting the issue.
Director of Communications for Kloma Gbi, Henking A. Adjase-Kodjo, expressed satisfaction with PURC’s swift response to the petition. “We commend the Regional Manager and her team for prioritizing this issue and hope the necessary steps will be taken to resolve it within days,” he said.
Dr. Eric Tamatey Lawer, General Secretary of Kloma Hengme, urged PURC to address the broader issue of inequitable water distribution in the Krobo area.
“Equity in the distribution of water to Krobo communities and neighboring towns is our ultimate goal,” he emphasized.
