The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has appealed directly to Ghana’s political leaders to put the nation’s interest above partisanship and personal gain in addressing the galamsey crisis.

In their statement, the Bishops cautioned that the destruction of natural resources, livelihoods, and health systems is a collective danger that should never be trivialized along party lines.

They urged politicians to rise above the temptation of profiting from illegal mining and to remember that they hold public office as custodians of the nation’s future.

“To politicians: place Ghana above personal and partisan advantage,” the statement stressed, warning that selfish political choices are leaving behind “a desert in place of a homeland.”

The Bishops further called on chiefs to uphold their sacred responsibility as custodians of the land, religious leaders to speak boldly without fear or favour, and security agencies to act with integrity rather than serving as accomplices to galamsey operators.

Highlighting the urgency of the crisis, they reminded leaders that this struggle is not merely about law enforcement but about “choosing between life and death, blessing and curse.” They called for unity of purpose in confronting the menace, adding that the very soul of Ghana is at stake.
