The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) has expressed grave concern over the devastating impact of illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey) on the environment, human health, and aquatic life. Despite government efforts, the crisis has reached a boiling point, necessitating a state of emergency.
PUWU joins Organised Labour in demanding that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declare a state of emergency, halting all mining activities in forest reserves and around water bodies. The declaration should include, an immediate halt to all mining activities in forest reserves and around water bodies, evacuation and destruction of mining equipment in these areas and revocation of licenses granted for prospecting and mining in protected areas
PUWU warns that if the government fails to address these concerns by September 30, 2024, they will join demonstrations and a nationwide strike.
The union urges its members to support the fight against illegal and unethical mining to save the environment and lives.
The union emphasizes that Galamsey has become a national crisis, requiring decisive action.
A state of emergency will send a clear message that illegal and unethical mining will no longer be tolerated. PUWU demands immediate action to protect the environment, human health, and aquatic life.
