The Public Utility Workers’ Union of TUC Ghana (PUWU of TUC Ghana) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama on his election as President of the Republic of Ghana following his victory in the December 7, 2024, elections.

In a press statement issued by the Union, PUWU acknowledged the challenges within the utilities, energy, and housing sectors and expressed its readiness to work collaboratively with the new administration to provide sustainable and affordable solutions for all Ghanaians.

“As a Union with members primarily in the utilities and housing sectors, we are committed to collaborating with the government in addressing critical challenges in energy, housing, and water at affordable costs to citizens,” the statement read.

PUWU also commended the growing interest and recommendations from various commentators and interest groups concerning the energy sector.

However, the Union expressed concerns over unverified solutions being proposed without adequate stakeholder engagement or evidence of success.

The Union reaffirmed its long-standing opposition to the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), emphasizing its belief in alternative measures that better serve the interests of Ghanaians.

PUWU recalled its engagements with the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration and reiterated its position on preserving ECG as a public asset while addressing the cost and management challenges in the power sector.

“While we recognize the influence of political control on the management of the power sector, we remain steadfast in advocating for solutions that reduce input costs and ensure fair electricity pricing,” the statement continued.

PUWU assured President Mahama of its full cooperation and commitment to working with his government through relevant ministries to address longstanding utility sector issues, including those affecting ECG.

Concluding the statement, Timothy N.Y. Me, General Secretary of PUWU, extended best wishes to President Mahama for a successful tenure, emphasizing the Union’s dedication to contributing to the nation’s development.
