Ex-Black Stars forward Asamoah Gyan has acknowledged that Ghana won’t have it easy in their bid to make the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Africa’s all-time top scorer in the history of the World Cup made this comment after the draw on Thursday, July 13, 2023, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gyan noted that Ghana has been very consistent in the World Cup since its first appearance in 2006 and has become accustomed to competing in the biggest sporting event on the planet.
When asked about Ghana’s opponents in the qualifications, he remarked that while there is high hope for the squad to qualify, it won’t be simple.
“I think since 2006 when we qualified for the first time till 2022, I think we have been very consistent except in 2018 that we didn’t qualify,” he said.
“It looks like we are getting used to the World Cup. 2026 is not going to be easy because the expectation is high back home, but we will try our possible best to make sure we also qualify.”
Ghana was drawn in Group I with the likes of Mali, Madagascar, the Central African Republic, the Comoros, and Chad.
