A violent rainstorm has wreaked havoc in the Amakye-Bare community of the Atwima Nwabiagya District in the Ashanti Region, destroying more than 60 houses and leaving at least five people injured.
According to residents, the storm lasted only five minutes but was accompanied by powerful winds that caused significant destruction, displacing over 100 people and leaving several families homeless.
Eyewitnesses say some of the collapsed buildings trapped residents inside. Assembly member for the area, Collins Osei-Tutu, confirmed the incident to JoyNews, noting that swift intervention efforts helped rescue those trapped.
“In one house, a man, his wife, and children were caught under the rubble of a collapsed building. They sustained injuries but were rescued in time.
Additionally, some workers who took shelter in a container were swept away by the storm,” Osei-Tutu said.
In the wake of the disaster, a traditional ruler in the community has stepped in to cover medical expenses for the injured. Meanwhile, residents are appealing to the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for urgent assistance.
“We have reported the incident to the district assembly and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and we are awaiting their support,” Osei-Tutu added.
James Kwabena Nketiah, the NADMO Director for the municipality, acknowledged the severity of the situation and said the agency is assessing the damage to coordinate relief efforts.
