The Director of Ghana Education Study Development Institute (GESDI), Madam Eva Gyina-Bediako has appealed to sanitary pad-producing companies in the country to reduce the prices of pads to enable the girl child to afford them across the nation, particularly in the Central Region.
She indicated that many school-going adolescent girls in the region during menstruation are forced to stay home due to their inability to afford sanitary pads.
Madam Eva Gyina-Bediako revealed this at the Emotional Intelligence Africa Summit – 2022 held at the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Cape Coast on the theme; Safeguarding the Next Generation – The Role of Emotional Intelligence.
According to her, most of these girls during their menstrual flow are compelled to stay home due to the shame associated when they stain themselves in the process because they lack the willpower to afford a sanitary pad leaving them to resort to the use of toilet rolls.
The prices of sanitary pads in the country have skyrocketed in the past weeks raising lots of talking points from girl child advocates and the general public.
Madam Eva Gyina-Bediako thereby appealed to sanitary pad-producing companies in Ghana to come to the region’s aid by reducing prices.
She, however, shared her ordeal to Accra-UK-based Rainbow radio on how awkward schools, churches and the general public find the discussion on menstruation and menstrual flow in adolescent girls to be.
She, therefore, urged these institutions to develop that habit to help these school-going adolescent girls to feel okay whenever they find themselves in such conditions.
The Central Region according to a series of surveys conducted, depicts the region to be among those with the lowest rate in terms of girl child education.
Speaking on the theme of the program, Mr James Kwesi Addison, the founder of Addison International Centre of Emotional Intelligence (AICEI) and the brain behind the summit encouraged parents to be extra cautious of what their children often watch, both on television and on their phones as such things can make and unmake their wards.
