Repentant armed robber, identified only as Alex, has made disturbing revelations about how weapons freely circulate among criminal gangs in Ghana—allegations he says are a major driver of the country’s rising robbery and violent crime cases.
Speaking on Ghana Se Sen on Lawson TV on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Alex claimed that some police officers, hunters, and community members unknowingly or deliberately supply guns to criminals for operations.
According to him, certain corrupt police officers secretly provide guns to armed robbers and later receive a share of the proceeds after successful operations.
“Some police officers give us guns for missions, and after the robbery, we give them their share,” he boldly alleged.
Alex also revealed that many robbers obtain weapons from local hunters living in the same communities, who are tricked into lending out their guns without knowing the weapons will be used for crimes.
“Those who live in our vicinity and are hunters—those are the people we lure to give us their guns. You can’t tell them you’re going to use it for robbery; they won’t give it to you,” he said.
The reformed robber insisted that the circulation of guns in communities is completely out of control, and without decisive action, the situation will worsen.
“All the guns must be collected and given only to important people who genuinely need them. Otherwise, crime will continue,” he stressed.
However, he expressed doubt that criminals will voluntarily surrender illegal weapons during any amnesty program.
“I don’t think they will surrender their guns,” he warned.
Alex contrasted Ghana’s lax gun circulation with the strict systems in some neighbouring countries.
“In Ivory Coast, you can’t just get access to a gun. If you try, citizens will blow the alarm immediately,” he noted.
He urged communities and neighbours to act as whistleblowers, saying the public must take an active role if Ghana is to reduce violent crime.
Alex’s revelations come at a time when the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has confirmed worrying crime statistics — 628 robberies and 340 murders recorded as of July 2025 — triggering nationwide concern about rising insecurity.
The Ministry of the Interior has issued a six-week ultimatum to individuals in possession of unregistered firearms, directing them to voluntarily surrender their weapons or face severe sanctions.
